The Canterbury

By utilizing contemporary design elements to complement The Canterbury’s architecture, KGK worked closely with the homeowners to develop a multifunctional, resort-inspired space for the homeowners and their guests to enjoy throughout the year. Utilizing a cool grey color scheme, the dry laid limestone pavers and charcoal grey veneer stone were selected to tie the new construction to the existing residence. While the design was focused on creating a signature pool element, the design team at KGK recognized that providing connections to the home’s walkout basement and front yard was necessary as well, and a series of terraces were implemented to balance function and interest, developing zones that allow for moments of intimate conversation during large gatherings. Rather than installing a standalone water feature, a terrace was added above the pool, creating space for a unique water wall while maintaining the open lines of sight to the existing woodland beyond. Based on the clients’ request for a secondary space that could be enjoyed without entering the pool area, KGK added a pergola and fireplace to the design, creating a secondary intimate space to gather throughout the year. Surrounding the Canterbury, strategically placed lighting calls attention to the lush, layered plantings, selected to balance ease of maintenance with a traditional American planting palette.
