Annex

Inspired by the owner’s childhood home, an overlooked courtyard space was transformed into a conservatory for The Annex project. KGK was brought in by the homeowner to create a functional space from an awkward, underused courtyard area. Working closely with the client, a conservatory was designed for the space, integrating glass ceiling and wall elements into the structure. The glazed roof is the trademark of the conservatory. Beyond the novelty, the roof allows sunlight and heat into the room, creating the ideal environment for relaxing and indoor gardening. Casement windows and French doors were selected to allow the owner to open the entire structure to the outdoors on warm summer days. Sandstone pavement was selected inside of the room, and the material was introduced throughout the existing landscape around the home, tying the spaces together. Outside of the room, sandstone walls were fabricated from materials salvaged from the property. Simple plantings were added to the composition, emphasizing the contrasting materials and providing a sense of permanence to the space.
